SKYWARN ALERT LEVEL SYSTEM

Comments

from our county coordinator, rick tighe n2phi:

Camden County SKYWARN will implement a three tier alert level system. Its purpose is to assist in the activation phase for long duration events. During the Severe Weather season, it is likely that the National Weather Service will issue weather watches well ahead of actual precipitation. For this reason it has become ever more necessary to create the three tier system.

The three tier system will utilize codes and colors to substantiate the level in which the threat is positioned. Once the codes and colors are memorized, spotters will be able to differentiate which level of alert is necessary and also from a color standpoint which level the program is in at all times without having to actually state skywarn activation. In addition, time frames to correspond with the colors will be utilized as well.

Code Green

Advisory

Advanced notice for the potential of weather to effect the county. 12-24 hours advanced notice. Email sent to group, text page if necessary (Hurricane Watch). Stand by mode may be activated if needed.

Code Yellow:

Stand By

Used to notify group of the possibility for activation, 12 hours or less advanced notice. Email updates to follow up to advisory level. This level would be used when Watches are issued. Text page may be necessary.

Code Red:

Activation

Used to activate group due to a Warning being issued, threat may be imminent or likely to occur. Little to no advanced warning due to the nature of the short fuse warnings which have little to no advanced lead time. Text page and email sent.

Different situations will require longer activation periods. Spotters are asked to actively participate in the nets, try and stay in the net as long as possible. Longer activations will require net controllers to take shifts. Realistically we need two people to conduct a net, at least one licensed amateur and an assistant to email and text page, answer phone calls. When responding to the EOC bring picture ID, snacks, food, drinks etc. Microwave and refrigerator available for use by members.
